Silly Season Turkey Sausage Rolls

Turkey sausage rolls

These sausage rolls really go down a treat and will definitely be part of the Christmas spread at my house this year. Turkey mince provides them with the same beefy texture you get from a beef sausage roll but with much less saturated fat. They are the perfect plate of food for you to bring to your next silly season event as bite sized snacks for the sharing table!

Ingredients:

  • 100g mushroom, finely diced

  • 1 large carrot, finely grated

  • 1 cup wholemeal bread crumbs

  • 1 brown onion, finely diced

  • 500g extra lean turkey mince

  • 2 tbsp fresh thyme leaves

  • 1/4 cup tomato paste

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • a good crack of black pepper

  • 3 sheets of reduced fat puff pastry

  • 3 tsp sesame seeds

  • 1 egg, lightly beaten

Method:

  1. Prepare all ingredients as stated above and preheat your oven to 220C fan bake.

  2. Combine mushrooms, carrot, bread crumbs, mice, onion, thyme, tomato paste, Worcestershire, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Mix together with your hands.

  3. Lay the sheets of pastry flat on a bench and use either a piping bag or a zip lock bag with a 2cm diameter hole at the end to pipe the mixture along one edge of the sheet.

  4. Pipe the mixture along one edge of the sheet and then roll the pastry over allowing the edges to overlap about 2cm. Cut the roll off and chop into thirds.

  5. Place the rolls on a lined baking tray with the seam down. Repeat this until you run out of filling.

  6. Coat the sausage rolls in the egg mixture and sprinkle them with the sesame seeds.

  7. Bake or 20 minutes or until golden, cook slightly less if preparing ahead of time and re-bake at the same temp until golden.

  8. Enjoy with your favourite dipping sauce - I enjoy a classic tomato sauce.
